Shelves or no?

Put the dresser in the closet. Leave the rod so that half of it can still be used to hang stuff.

My son has a small closet like your’s. We thought about doing a rod on top and shelves on the bottom, but after talking to several ppl we opted to do one side shelves and one side as hanging with two rods, while keeping one long shelf across the top.

So glad we did! Most of his clothes are folded. The hanging clothes he does have are long sleeve shirts, nice slacks, and hoodies. He is 12 and 5’6” so his hanging clothes wouldn’t fit if the shelves were below.
