Shelves or no?

I was thinking about taking out this rod and putting shelves in here. This is for my son's closet. It would free up space in his room because then he wouldn't need a dresser.

The non-clothes items in here can be stored elsewhere.

I love the way the closets in the kids bedrooms have 2 short rods and shelves. So there’s a long shelf up top then one side has two shelves and a rod the other has 5 and a rod. If I wasn’t in the process of rearranging ydd’s room, I’d take a picture to show you but I have everything kind of all over including sort piles on her closet floor. I’m really a minimalist when it comes to furniture and it has eliminated the need of a dresser.

And I am a practical person. If you minimalize to the point you have no dresser what will you do for drawers? Everyone needs some drawers. And you always need to hang some clothes. I arranged my closet with two short poles and when I moved back into that house years later the first thing I did was get rid of that arrangement because it didn't work. Well, I hope it works for you.

For drawers, you could use baskets.

I would leave it the way it is

I would put shelves below where the clothes hang, since they don't go all the way down. You might even be able to fit a small dresser in there.

Put the dresser in the closet.

I like this. I would not eliminate hanging space. There are just some things (like sweatshirts) that are very bulky when folded and easier to hang.

Also think about the eventual resale of your house. Most people like closets with a bar. Something like this is actually very attractive and does the double duty you want.

I would not take the rod down. How old is your son? At some point, you will want some hanging space. I bought cheap shelving at Target and placed it on the bottom part of the closet, to serve as more storage.
