don't ignore what they said in their reply - respond to something in it
try to pick something about their reply they didn't expect you to respond to, thus changing the topic
How to score :
winning isn't really the point. being amusing, honing your skills, teaching others how to recognize thread hijacking - that's the point
but if you want a way to mentally keep track of your own score, award yourself a point each time you successfully predict in which direction someone is going to take the thread, before you read their reply.
better yet, if you see replies that you didn't predict, and that amuse you with their skill, give the reply a 'like'
