When I worked for Big Lots they used to completely destroy food that was to be thrown away because one time someone climbed in their dumpster, ate some nasty food, got sick and sued successfully.

Well... dumpster diving is a thing. The people who do it are called “freegans”. In the Food Network show “The Big Waste”, Anne Burrell went dump diving for ingredients for her gourmet dinner.

Where DH works (industrial park lots of factories) there are 4 dumpsters specifically for food.
The factories would dump PALLETS of chips and salsa and pretzels-all still in the bags/cans/bottles-NOT EVEN OPEN-and some dumpster divers would come in overnight and clean out the dumpsters-somebody got a bug up their ass and put up a sign

"Trespassers will be shot and prosecuted."
And set up security cameras and tried to say the divers were stealing HIS PROPERTY
Needless to say the dumpsters were removed.

As long as they don't make a mess-who the hell cares?!?!
