So I finally got dd on track with going to the gym without complaining because she's seeing results so that is over woo-hoo.

My biggest issue right now is I don't know whether to go back to school or not. As you all know i graduated community college at the start of the pandemic. My sole motivation for going and finishing was I wanted my mom to see me graduate because I didn't finish highschool.I dropped out because I was being horribly bullied everyday and no one would help me. I even went to the assistant principal about it. Nevertheless I graduated and my mom still didn't see me walk the stage because covid shut everything down so I just got my degree in the mail.

I planned to go to unlv to finish when I got to Vegas but as you all know my mom passed from cancer literally two days after I got to Vegas and I've been in Vegas 2 years now and I just lost my motivation to go back to school. I started doing rideshare and I make decent money but I hate doing it.I don't like driving my new car and putting all these miles on it.

I want to get a 9 to 5 but I'm terrified. Im afraid of the interview process when they see the lack of work history what am i to say? Yeah I've been doing gig apps for the past 15 years?

My govt benefits is ending completely next year.I have to figure things out now.My therapist told me to go back to school and finish. I told him i have no motivation and he said just apply it will come so I went ahead and applied for UNLV.I already have 74 college credits and I went through the requirements for my bachelors and all the courses and I'm pretty confident that I can handle the classes. I suck at math ... horribly so the only course that concerns me is the economics course. I also have to do an unpaid internship 480 hours over 2 semesters. That doesn't bother me at all I did a 300 hour internship at the associate level a few years ago.

I don't know if I should just nix going back to school and face my fear and apply for 9 to 5's now or if I should go back and get my bachelors and have more options for jobs in a couple years? If i go back to school I can't get a 9 to 5 for 2 more years. I'll be too busy with school and the internships.

I'm also nervous about going back to school because of the amount of work ill have to put in the classes. I HATE, HATE, HATE writing papers!! I had to 10 page papers in my associate degree classes and I almost died doing them! I don't know if I want to put myself through that torture again. Of course I will do it to pass my classes but Im not particularly motivated like I was before its not like my mother is here to see me graduate.

Dd update ... She is doing very well at community college so far. First semester she got straight A's . She is taking college algebra this semester and she's doing well. Were signing up for summer semester so she can take biology and biology lab by itself. I barely passed biology it's a hard class so I told her to take it by itself over the summer so she has no other distractions . We're paying for it OOP so we don't waste financial aid on a single class.

DS is doing meh in school...he is passing all his classes BUT gym. He swears he's doing what the teacher says but I call b.s regardless he is going to summer school this year to make up credits. He wants to be a truck driver and get his cdl so he's working on his driving permit right now . He has his trucking school money saved and put away already. He wants to work and get a job immediately after highschool ..

That's my life update.

Stop doing things in your life because you want to please others. It's great that you want to get your life together but what is your goal for a job? What will you be happy doing? If that requires a college education go for it but if not just go get a job even if it's just a basic one to gain some work experience so you'll have it when you apply foe your dream job.

Honestly right now I just want to work at a basic job like Amazon. There's a building that is right down the street from me but I joined an Amazon web group and there are so many ppl complaining about how horrible it is on their bodies. They are skinny fit people! Some guy quit in a week because he couldn't take it physically .I know I'm in zero condition to work a physical job like that I can barely stand upright a few minutes without my back and feet aching.

I don't think Amazon is an option for me. Ultimately I want a sit down at a desk job but it's not attainable without a degree.I wanted to help people like me that's why I majored in social work because who knows how bad it is besides me? I also wanted to apply to work at the welfare office but you need a bachelor's degree..it doesn't have to be in social work it could be any degree but it has to be a bachelor's level so regardless I will have to finish school if I want a chance to get a job at a desk.

II can't think of anything else I'm interested in .

Why are your benefits ending? And how do you plan to support the 3 of you if you are in school and don't work and receive no benefits?

I think getting a degree would be a huge motivator and boost for your self esteem as well as giving you broader career options so I say go for it. Currently, and even while getting your degree you are going to need to be employed. Have you thought about working in reception or guest services at one of the Vegas hotels? I don't believe a degree is a requirement and the hours could give you the flexibility to attend classes and it wouldn't be hard on your body. Amazon is brutal!

Yeah my bil worked at Amazon and loved it but he's a physical hard labor kind of person.
Certainly there's a lot of desk jobs that don't require a degree especially in Vegas. It doesn't sound to me like the welfare office is the place for you honestly. I know you want to help people and it's a good reason to get into it but you won't have the ability to change the welfare system for them and knowing that you think it's bad I think it would just frustrate you. I know how hard it is to turn someone away who needs help because of rules and regulations I don't agree with. It just made me feel like part of the problem because I couldn't fix it for them.
I'd start by applying at a hotel or casino or something and see if you can find a good fit there. If you want to help people maybe look into jobs at a food bank or something. Or maybe volunteer at a homeless shelter when you aren't working. There are a lot of options out there.

Social work is not typically a high paying job, but if you work for the state or county it can have good health plans and retirement benefits. Definitely worth pursuing those. You might want to see if there is a career counseling office at the university you are considering, and if they can help you map out the best courses to reach your goal.

First you need to decide what you want to do. Furthering your education is great BUT if you have areas you hate you won't succeed in those in the workforce. You hate to write so bei g a secretary wouldn't be ideal. You hate math so being an accountant wouldn't suit. What is your passion? Figure that out then decide what to pursue for education.

Employment options NOW would be temp agencies. That would give you experience with a 9-5 but would also allow flexibility. You could request only temp contracts at first then move into a temp to hire position. Many companies when hired will actually pay for your education (not temp agencies but full time employers).

Your son should look into a trade/technical school through the school district. Our local center meets the needs of 9 inassociated districts. He could get both his HS diploma and a certification in his chosen field if offered.

The best quote to remember--a journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step.

I have no real advice. However, as someone who loves writing (anything) and was originally an English major, I spent the majority of my life thinking I suck at math. I found out quickly that just wasn't true and switched my degree to accounting.

All of that to say that you shouldn’t allow yourself to explore other career paths simply because you think you suck at math and writing. Although I have no knowledge of your math skills, I’ve read many things that you’ve written and you have a distinct (even if uncertain) writing voice.

Don’t go into a class with the mindset that it will suck because I can promise you that it most certainly will if you do.
