Over-lining lips

I don't want to be insulting, I mean this with all sincerity. When someone over-lines their lips, do they think it actually makes their lips look bigger?

There is nothing wrong with big lips, small lips, or wearing your make up however you please. I'm just curious if people think it makes their lips look bigger because to me, it just looks like you have applied your lipstick/liner outside of your lip line. It's not creating any kind of optical illusion to make your lips look bigger.

Or does it?

In person, face to face, it looks ridiculous. However from a distance say for a stage show or on film (camera or video) it can have the desired effect and create the illusion of larger lips. I don't think it was ever intended to be utilized as a daily makeup look.

Growing up, it was thought that lip liner was meant to help contour the lips and almost leave a boundary for the lipstick. IOW, not allow the lipstick to cross the threshold, so to speak.

Great, unless you smeared it.

I never used lip liner back then and don't wear lipstick in general now.

Depends on the look. Done correctly, you’d have to look closely to notice and it will create the appearance of a fuller lip. Done incorrectly, not so much. Then you have those going for a dramatic or artistic look and intentionally noticeable.

I don’t like it.. But I guess it’s better than overly injected lips that look like they are about to explode.

I've never seen it look good. It's always noticeable to me.
