Colorado Gov. Jared Polis on Thursday commuted the prison term of a truck driver who was sentenced to 110 years after a fatal accident in 2019, reducing the sentence to 10 years.

The man, Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, 26, killed four people on April 25, 2019, after, he said, his brakes failed on the downhill grade on Interstate 70 eastbound outside Denver. Prosecutors argued that Aguilera-Mederos acted recklessly and made a series of poor decisions before the wreck.

IMO, this is fair. My heart goes out to his family but some punishment was warranted. 10 years is a lot (5 if on good behavior) but I hope that everyone is able to find peace with the verdict and the sentence. I'm not sure what an appropriate sentence would be in this case but seems as if it is much more appropriate than the 110 years. Again, I hope his family can find some peace.

This seems much more reasonable. He can pay his debt to society, and then still get out and do something with his life. It's tragic what his actions (or inactions) caused but it certainly doesn't warrant keeping him locked up for life.

Was it careless driving? Or careless maintenance of the vehicle? Or a bit of both?

Lots of ordinary people driving ordinary vehicles make a careless mistake and kill multiple people and I don't think they even get 10 years. Why do you think this driver deserves more?
