The cause seems to be a fire in a warehouse where tons of confiscated ammonium nitrate had been stored for years.
The many videos going around of this explosion are shocking.

4,000 injured. That's massive. What is ammonium nitrate used for and why did they store it for years?

According to the article:
“ Gabriel da Silva, a senior lecturer in chemical engineering at the University of Melbourne explained that ammonium nitrate is a common industrial chemical used mainly for fertiliser because it is a good source of nitrogen for plants.

It is also one of the main components in mining explosives.

Ammonium nitrate is not explosive on its own, rather it is an oxidiser, drawing oxygen to a fire – and therefore making it much more intense.

However, da Silva explained, it only ignites under the right circumstances, and these are difficult to achieve. “You need extreme circumstances to set off an explosion,” he said.

While ammonium nitrate can in fact put out a fire, if the chemical itself is contaminated, for example with oil, it becomes highly explosive.

“I think that’s what’s happened here,” said da Silva.

While the chemicals in the air should dissipate fairly quickly, lingering pollutants can cause problems later, for example if they acidify rain.

“If you look at the smoke that came from the blast it’s this kind of blood red colour . That’s because of the nitrogen oxide air pollutants in it,” he said.”

And what do you know? Even with this Trump managed to screw up... he could’ve just expressed condolences and offered help to Lebanon, but noooo. He started babbling about how this “looks like an attack” and when pressed for more details he first said “his generals” agreed with him (something the Pentagon has denied) and second, well, if it went kaboom it must be a bomb because nothing else explodes if it’s not a bomb 🙄 Only terrorist bombs explode! It was the number one answer on Family Feud!!

Seriously, doesn’t he realize that such a comment carries a different weight when made by the POTUS? And since this is a POTUS known for leaking security information many will think he may have information others don’t and he just let it slip because, well, he’s an idiot. Doesn’t he realize the implications of babbling about an “attack” when there’s still no evidence to suggest that’s what it is?
Hopefully it won’t have bigger implication, since he’s also known as the POTUS who always pulls crap out of his ass.

Normally his speculation without any evidence would be dangerous but I noticed that no one took him seriously.

I did here that it could have been on purpose(that’s what my husband said and he has high security clearance) some think that maybe someone knew it was stores there and set fire close to the building with the intention of it reaching the explosives.

Thankfully! That’s how every one of his statements should be taken: not seriously.

Speculation between people just talking and a president claiming it was an attack within hours are two different things. He's always been too free with his opinions backed up with zero evidence or verfications.
