Yes. But we prepare every spring for the possibility of flooding and power outages so not really doing anything differently. I did buy 4 cases of diet coke today though. We have also discussed a little bit about what we will do if the school closes for a period of time and I'm a little concerned about my job if the town decided to cancel events. Certainly not in panic mode but just a bit concerned.

Nope. And they don't "look smart". They "look" ridiculous.

OMG, no. I still don’t see what the panic is about. I understand it’s an inconvenient bug in the sense that it very contagious and it transmits before symptoms appear, so it can happen that some workplaces will end up wing quarantined for 2-3 weeks and that sucks for the economy. But it’s not really a seriously nasty bug. The vast majority of people recover with no problem. The mortality rate seems to be 2%, and that includes the elderly, newborns and people with health conditions. So I’m really not about to barricade myself over it. Seriously, the flu is worst and we dismiss it as “just the flu”, so why are we getting all hysterical about this one?

The problem is that governments are barricading people.

When they’re sick or likely to be sick. I would do that as well in that situation.
I certainly wouldn’t do it in panic when there’s been one confirmed case in my country.
And if you’re talking about China doing that, well... there’s what a socialist/communist government is about.

China will definitely get away with a lot more in terms of forcing quarantines. The most recent news is it's slowing down in China (although they are probably lying) and it's rapidly growing in other countries.

I usually stockpile before winter just in case we're stuck. I'm not worried about the coronavirus.

2% mortality is pretty high. DH and I were talking about this today. If there were diagnosed cases in our town, should they shut the schools? Should public events be cancelled? Should restaurants and businesses remain open? Part of me thinks that we should do business as usual but the other half of me would mourn losing 2% of our county residents, even if they are elderly, young, or immunocompromised. I would be willing to barricade myself to protect my neighbors.

My mother is in an extended care facility and they have already announced protocol if/when coronavirus comes to her city. Residents would self quarantine and meals would be delivered.

The flu also mainly affects the elderly and the very young or ill but at least there is treatment and vaccine.

WHO indicated that about 70% of the population will get the coronavirus. At 2% death rate, that is 4,578,000 people dying of Coronavirus in the US alone. That's a shit ton of people!

The mortality rate is considerably higher for the elderly. Why are they getting all "hysterical"? Maybe because it's a new virus that originated in a dictatorship that isn't known for sharing information.

I would much rather the governments of the world exercise too much caution instead of underestimating how bad it could be. No one wants a repeat of the Spanish Influenza.
