I find it is a mix. The busier it is the more people are cold. But all-in-all, most people are at least polite.
With respect to this topic (and many)...The less you expect from people, the less disappointed you will be.

That’s not my experience at all, there are people who are on a mission (or rude), sure, but most people are friendly. Maybe you need to live somewhere else.

Honestly I probably looked bitchy today. Number one I knew I was going to spend a lot of money and number two I really didn't want to be in a grocery store. I don't take it personally. I figure for all I know the cranky persons dog died or their denture hurts. Maybe their kid's in jail or failing school. I don't worry.
I do most of it online but I prefer it the way you described. I don’t want help. I don’t really need a greeting. I’ll be nice if someone is nice to me but I prefer to be left alone.
