Who is this person to me? Why don't they want me there? How does their family feel about it? That information would affect my answer.

I don't go to funerals regardless. Only exception would be my DH or kids, God forbid.

I would assume others know about the letter. So they read the request of the deceased.

No. Neither of my parents want/wanted a funeral. I don't want a funeral either. I want to remember people as they were-not laying dead in a casket. I have been to showings for moral support of my DH and his family, and seeing someone dead is not an image you can get out of your mind.
