CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Republican Dan Bishop narrowly defeated Democrat Dan McCready in a special election on Tuesday in North Carolina's 9th Congressional District.

The race was being closely watched for possible signs of weakness among Republican voters that could have spelled bad news nationally in 2020 for President Donald Trump, who endorsed Bishop and campaigned for him on Monday.

A special election was called in the district after last year’s results weren't certified due to allegations of fraud.

Bishop was ahead with 50.7 percent, or 96,004 votes, and McCready had 48.7 percent, or 92,066 votes, with about 98 percent of the tally in. NBC News projected Bishop as the winner shortly after 10:00 pm, ET.

That's great news for Trump's reelection chances.

He actually won by a much larger margin than the previous candidate beat McCready by. Bishop won by just under 4,000 votes. The previous candidate beat McCready by only 905.

Reports are McCready massively outspent Bishop. It seems President Trump actually helped get him elected.

How so? This is a Trump +12 district. Bishop barely eked out a win, and did terribly in the suburban areas Republicans have started to see slip away from them.

The last candidate to run against McCready won by 905, Bishop by just under 4,000 or 4x the amount. I don’t call that “barely eked”

It was like 50.5% vs 49.5% rounded off. That’s a Republican southern state, not really impressive.

There are more Democrats in the Raleigh Durham Chapel Hill area - many from other areas of the USA who are working at the Tech companies and UNC and NC State. So things are looking up finally!

It was 50.7% to 48.7% in a district Trump won by 12 points and that’s been GOP held since 1963, winning with much larger margins. A 2% victory is barely scraping out a win, and doesn’t exactly scream that the Trump/GOP brand is strong going into 2020.
