I've never heard a satisfactory answer to the question but judging by other things I've heard said by those who think it's not a big deal, they either think we owe it to the people crossing illegally because this country is seen to be so much better than where these people are coming from and/or that it's not enough people to cause a strain at all for America. I'm in a border state, I can say it's a huge deal and causes an enormous strain.

the leaders- votes, flipping red states blue forever. Of course its under the guise of "morality".
their followers- because they're told its the only moral way to be and it doesn't impact them personally enough yet.
