At what point do you drop full coverage on your car?

We tried to drop DS from our policy when he left for boot camp. He was no longer driving at all and they would not let us because he technically still lived at home. Again, this might depend on your insurance carrier, but definitely worth asking the question.

We ended up changing carriers so that we didn't have to add him to the policy.

We since added our 16yo DD and it sky rocketed (which I get) but it's now up to $4000 a year for full coverage on 3 cars and 4 drivers. Myself, DH, DS 22 and DD 16. We have 3 cars a 2017 Ford Explorer, 2020 Ford F150, and my 2023 Blazer. We do not have any car loans so that's not an issue. DS 22 drives the explorer and is away at school and will stay there after he graduates next month. I'm thinking of dropping that to just liability. Thoughts? Also DD 16 is away at school and barely drives and has no car there so I'm going to call today to see if that matters. $4000 a year is crazy right? USAA is who we have.
I'm in Canada and pay 900 a year for one car (2003 toyota Camry) with just me on it and no collision. $4000 for 3 cars and 4 drivers with collision sounds pretty good, lol. When I inquired about adding a new driver I was quoted an extra $300 a MONTH for her.
Who are you with? That seems really high. I am also in Canada and pay just around $850 for full coverage on a 2013 car. I am getting a new car after the winter and I have been quoted $1,100 for full coverage and that will be a 2024. My son pays $1,500 for full coverage and he is 18 and just got his full G this summer.

Until 20 minutes ago I was with TD. After writing that I went online and got some quotes. As of Next month I'm with Heartland for 320 a year. Apparently loyalty isn't worth much.

Yeah unless you were caught doing 100 in a school zone you were over paying big time. Glad you looked around and got a better deal.

If you are paying more for insurance than you would get if it was totaled by an uninsured driver then maybe. But your cars are not that old. I would keep full coverage on them.

(Knock on wood) we’ve never really carried full coverage.

Call your insurance about a discount for it being rarely driven. That drooped the cost of one of our vehicles in half. I just had to report the odometer reading each year.
Even our 1998 f150 has full coverage. The older the vehicle the cheaper it is to insure because their value is lower to replace. It's worth it to me.

We have liability-only on the car we inherited from my dad. It is very old, in very bad shape, and it's our "road trip" car, not something we drive very often. Plus, it's a tank, so none of our kids are going to be allowed to drive it for a very long time.

I'd say when you can afford to replace the car in cash and the car is being driven exclusively by an advanced driver.

I had one accident 9 years ago. It was a great price when I first got it but they were raising it every year

We have liability-only on my son's 2002 Jeep (we paid $4000 for it in 2010) and my daughter's 1997 Jeep (we paid $1500 for it in 2021). I'm just thankful that they're still running!
