How do I get a child evaluated for ODD?
She was referred in the past for testing for other things, like ADD and autism, so our pediatrician seems done with referring her for testing. And I totally understand that ODD means the problem is our parenting. But I'd still like the hand up, because everything we've tried so far hasn't worked.
You might try a pediatric therapist first, and see if they will do a referral.
Also ODD is believed to be a combination of factors, including biological, environmental, and genetic. Don't judge yourself or the child to quickly.
Good luck

We went to a pediatric behavioral specialist center when our boys had issues that we needed testing for. At the time my oldest was diagnosed with ODD along with Anxiety. Here is what they told me about ODD at the time (5 years ago).
ODD is a learned behavior usually as a coping mechanism to some other diagnosis. ODD is seen in a large number of ADHD kids. What happens is that they have this other issue (ADHD, anxiety, etc) but it's not diagnosed so it's not being treated so the child develops ODD behaviors as a way to cope with the root problem. Oftentimes once you discover and treat the real diagnosis, the ODD behaviors disappear over time. Of course there are exceptions. Sometimes the ODD behaviors don't disappear on their own and need therapy aimed directly at ODD. Sometimes ODD is present when no other diagnosis does. But a vast majority of cases, ODD accompanies something else.

I don’t know that it’s really debated, it just isn’t something that only has one cause. Most often it’s the result of ineffective parenting or trauma and sometimes it occurs without those.Anonymous 3 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2019 5:56 pm
This is debated even among professionals. Who knows? And who cares? OP is trying to get help now. Best of luck to her and her child. See a specialist. Pediatricians are not usually good at these things.
Any jerk who says that ODD is caused by bad parenting should be sentenced to spending the rest of their lives with an ODD child. I GUARANTEE you they'd change their tune posthaste.Anonymous 1 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2019 5:21 pm She was referred in the past for testing for other things, like ADD and autism, so our pediatrician seems done with referring her for testing.
