Protester dies, another fights for life after car drives into crowd on I-5

Eyewitnesses watched in horror as the car plowed into the crowd. Most protesters scrambled to safety, but two of them were unable to escape.

Washington State Patrol had put up barriers just before midnight to keep protesters and vehicles apart.

“He went around a series of vehicles that were blocking I-5 and went around on the shoulder where a group of pedestrians were standing,” said Washington State Patrol Capt. Ron Mead.

The trooper insisted pedestrians should not be on the freeway for their safety.

“And we’ve said that steadfast,” said Mead. “We’ve worked tirelessly to separate motorists from pedestrians fearing a tragedy like this could very well happen.”

Mead said it is illegal for pedestrians to be on the freeway, and he hopes the incident will persuade protesters to protest someplace safer.

This isn’t about him being Black. Based off the video, he should have slowed down instead of swerving around parked cars at full speed since that is normally an indicator that there may be people standing outside on the freeway (example: car accident).

This is a tragedy but it's one more time proof people should never protest on the highway. There is no need for that and the ones who allow them to need to face consequences.

I can’t find it now but I read something once explaining it in more eloquent terms than I’m about to: BLM started the practice of protesting on highways to demonstrate what it’s like to feel powerless. After just minutes of being inconvenienced - hell, at just the thought that they could be inconvenienced, people are enraged. Even outside actual incidents like this, the rhetoric of “run them down, kill them all” is ubiquitous. These are communities which have endured hundreds of years of violent oppression; if you can understand someone being mad enough to straight up murder them over an inconvenience, imagine how being targeted by power structures for generations must make them feel.

The driver got past roadblocks and was going the wrong way down the freeway. It wasn't a passerby.
