Hmmmm. I went and looked this up, because some members seem to think that lynchings only "belong" to a certain demographic. So, checking "lynching meaning" brings up quite a number of dictionary and vocabulary sites, and none of them use a race in defining lynching.

No race owns the term, it is not solely applicable to one race. By the definition, yes, Trump is quite right on this.

2nd, the word "lynch" is used metaphorically nowadays. just like "witch hunt" and even "nazi" in certain contexts "grammar nazi" for example. not the way aoc used it btw.

I am pretty sure democrats are being intentionally obtuse here and deflecting from the fact they are being totally unfair by refusing to vote on the impeachment inquiry and in effect removing trump's ability to defend himself, give the republican house minority the chance to question witnesses, cross examine them and view evidence
Ummm Trump is getting a much better “due process” than people who were lynched over shit as trivial as walking on the same side walk as white people.

I don’t much care about the comment Trump made but...Jesus Christ.

It’s a terrible analogy just as using lynching for an investigation. Not with America’s history of lynchings in southern states.

But since many republicans use the Hitler reference too (see my example of two of them) and the republican Tea Party used to prance around with signs of Obama with a Hitler mustache, I didn’t know which Them you were talking about.
BionicBunny wrote: Tue Oct 22, 2019 8:48 pm I thought it was pretty obvious who “ them” were considering we heard of many Democrats making this comparison in the news. The biggest one being AOC.

Apparently it’s ok for them to make these references. Double standards.
Who is "them"? Lawmakers use Hitler inappropriately all the time. Both sides. Two idiot Republican southern lawmakers who don't know their history compared modern day democratic socialism to fascism and Hitler. Trying to make people fear democrats. We deserve better from a President to know his history and not misuse it for personal gain.

The south has always been managed by right winged conservatives, regardless of labels at different points in history. That’s why a large number on that side of the fence still feels strongly about preserving confederate history and feels a lot of pride about it.

I don’t really hold the past against any particular group but the notion that Democrats are solely to blame or should be reminded of “thier history” is past ridiculous.

The tone on the south that facilitated that environment wasn’t limited to one particular party back then.

Not in so many words. The op said that this was racist language, and a comment from a member here, on page 1, reads "Actual lynchings in the USA were grisly murders, often celebrated in public, and racially motivated."

In this country they do. According to the NAACP, about 80% of lynchings were black people in the southern states, most in Mississippi, Georgia and Texas. White people in the south thought the freed slaves were getting too much power. White people got away with murder back then if it was a black person.

Learn your American history, especially about the south after the Civil War. Read about some of the specific lynchings that were recorded. It was 100% about race. I can’t believe that kind of ignorance is still out there.

White people were lynched in western states, the wild Wild West back then, but usually for murder or cattle theft or an actual crime. Big difference. .

I get disagreeing with her interpretation of the context or if Trump meant it in a racist way but I don’t think she meant Black people owned the word and enough Black people were lynched due to race in the past to speak on it from that angle.

None of these sources indicate that the word should only be used in relation to blacks. The word itself is not a racist word, nor does it belong to one race.

I do know my history, thank you very much. Yes, there was a time in our history when blacks made up the majority of victims, however, they were not the only victims. What I do not know is why the Left feels such a need to redefine our words. I think the answer to that might be quite interesting.
