There was a woman in a group asking to make mask out of old children's underwear. Wtf? Why the hell would anyone think that was ok?

That’s odd.

To play devil's advocate; It's just fabric. It's not like the children are wearing the underwear while they're on your face.

I saw a video awhile back of turning a bra into a mask.
The oranges of the island are like blazing fire
Amongst the emerald boughs
And the lemons are like the paleness of a lover
Who has spent the night crying.

My bras are so small they would barely cover my chin. Plus I am not wrecking a $50 bra when I can purchase a homemade mask for $8.00

It's very easy to make a mask. I made a lot for our family members and continue to make them because I just enjoy sewing now.
