I am finding if more and more difficult to purchase gifts for school age kids. Although some friends still like legos, Pokemon cards or nerf guns, OR even gift cards for their sports. This particular friend, really isn't into much. He told my DS, "I don't know, I really don't want anything".

I was going to throw $20 in a card with a box of candy and call it a day. My DH cringed at this ideal, saying it feels awkward & thoughtless...I don't attend parties that much anymore, nor do I have them for my kiddos, other than family parties. But DSs say that other families sometimes do it?

If we showed up at your child's birthday party with a cash gift, would you find this awkward? Do you think it is tacky to just give cash? Is it a faux pas?

That is the perfect gift for most kids.

I hate that its considered awkward because usually my kids have something bigger they are saving for and I'd so appreciate cash towards that over a million small things that clutter my house.

IMO, cash and candy are perfectly acceptable. My sister gave my son money for his 10th birthday. He was so excited that he got to pick out his own present.
