Is 18 really the proper legal adult age? should we change it?

sorry nevermind. You sent him at the right time. Even if he had to repeat a grade-that is better than just holding them back for no reason at the beginning.
No its not. If I had listened to my gut then my kid wouldn't have had the self esteem issues due to be held back
So he would have done better in a class at 7 surrounded by 5 years olds? Is he slow in some way?
Slow? No. He can run a mile in 7 minutes. Does he have a specified learning disability? Yes he does. He has dyscalculia

And when I turned 18 and finished high school I made my own decisions so being a legal adult was necessary. We cannot raise that age. If kids can graduate high school at 18, they need to have the legal power to make their own decisions after that.
So a kid that is held back and graduates at 19 instead of the normal 18 is a crock of crap?

Do you understand what past 18/high school means??? I guess not.

So what about the kids who graduate at 17......Should they be considered adults at 17. In one of the states that I live in kids can drop out at 16 so should they be considered adult..

"Past 18/high school...." sigh.

Nothing other than my math being wrong! I was thinking he will
Be 19, no 18, no 19. Oh he’ll forget it! Yes he graduates in 2030 and will turn 19 that following September, so he will be a college freshman at 19!

Msprekteacher wrote: Tue Dec 18, 2018 4:26 pm You have to remember that when many of the arbitrary rules were made our life expectancies were far shorter and our military needs greater. WW2 and Vietnam were accomplished in large part due to the draft.

My paternal grandmother was married at 18 and a mother the day before her 19th birthday!

Now who in their right mind would encourage their 18 year old to marry!

Certainly there needs to be a line where parents are no longer legally responsible for their adult children but I don’t think it should be 18. Our youngest will have turned 18 his junior year in high school (September baby) but I certainly wouldn’t consider him an “adult” in the sense of maturity or even ability to care for himself.
So your son will graduate high school at 19 3/4?? Almost 20 years old! That is ridiculous and has nothing to do with being a September baby. If he entered K at 6 he would still be 18 (and 3/4) at graduation. Something else happened.

Some don't have the sense at 60 that others have at 16. Changing the age at which you become a legal adult isn't going to change that.

Brains don't reach maturity until 25. I think that they should raise the ”adult age” from 18 to 21 because I mean you can't drink so if you can sign your life away to the military you should be able to have a beer. Also, you cannot buy cold medicine (ones with Dextro something in them) unless you are 19. So at 18, I can vote for the leader of the ”free world”, sign my life away to the military, get married and smoke but I cannot buy cold medicine or have a beer? Something doesn't add up.

My youngest used to run his mile in 5:43 in high school. 😀
